Instant Oats Oothapam

My friend Padma requested for some recipes for breakfast as she was bored with idly, dosa, upma. So was thinking for a while and came up with this instant oats oothapam recipe. The taste is really yummy, similar to that of maida dosa. I bet if anyone would find out its oats oothapam just by tasting it.

Oats, as you might know, are really healthy. They are high in fiber and help in cutting out cholesterol, lowering blood sugar and are less in calories. Generally we cook the oats and have it either with curd n a little salt or milk with little sugar or just gulp it down. I sometimes have it even with rasam :) But it could get boring this way. So try out oats oothapam in a while for a difference.

Ingredients
  • Sour Curd - 1/2 cup, well beaten
  • Oats - 1 cup
  • Rice flour - 4 tbsp
  • Onions -1 finely chopped
  • Green Chilli paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger paste - 1/2 tsp (not smoothly ground but just crushed in a mortar-pastel)
  • Carrot - 1/2 of carrot grated
  • Curry leaves - as required , finely chopped
  • Coriander - as required, finely chopped
  • Oil - as required to make dosas
Procedure
  • In a container, mix oats, rice flour with the sour curd and little water. Don't add lots of water at a go. Initially add 1/2 cup water. Once the soaking is done, add additional water if necessary to make up the consistency.
  • Add chopped onions, grated carrots, chilli paste, ginger paste, curry leaves and coriander. Add salt and mix well. Leave it to soak for 15 minutes.
  • Heat a tawa. Drizzle a little oil and pour a laddle full of batter and spread like dosa. Drizzle a few drops of oil over the dosa and cook.
  • Once done, turn it over and cook for a while.
  • Remove and serve hot with coconut chutney or chutney powder or any chutney of your choice. Tastes good even without any side dish.
TIPS
  • Cook the oothapam on medium flame so that oats get cooked.
