Poha - The microwave way

While I was browsing through few blogs, I came across Srivalli's blog which was hosting a MEC event on 365 days of microwave cooking. So here I'm editing my previous post to send an entry to the same.

Never thought poha would be so delicious when made in the oven with just 2 tsps of oil. Yes...2 tsps of oil..can you believe that? I did try it out and believe me it tastes so good.

I make poha either for breakfast or as an evening snack. It actually is a full meal in itself.

The output of my oven is 750W. The timings mentioned here are as per it. Please adjust the time as per the output of your oven.

Here's how I made it using the oven.

Ingredients
  • Poha / Aval / Atukulu - 1/2 cup thick variety
  • Onion - 1 finely chopped
  • Potato - 1 finely chopped
  • Green Chilli - 1 finely chopped
  • Green Peas - handful
  • Groundnuts - handful (more or less as per preference)
  • Salt - To Taste
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Lemon Juice - 1-2 tsp
  • Oil - 2 tsp
To Temper -
  • Mustard - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad Dal - 1/2 tsp
  • Channa Dal - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Coriander - a few chopped sprigs to garnish

Procedure
  1. In a paper plate or a microwave safe plate, roast groundnuts on Hi for about 1min 30 secs. See suggestions for more detail.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, add 2 tsp of oil and microwave for 10 secs.
  3. Add the tempering except corainder and microwave for about 50 secs with a lid on the bowl.
  4. Add the chopped potatoes, onions and mix well such that the oil is well coated. Microwave for about 4 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile wash and drain the poha. Add turmeric, salt, red chilli powder and lemon juice and give a good stir. After the onions and potatoes are done well, add the poha.
  6. Add frozen green peas and microwave for about 3 minutes.
  7. Add the roasted groundnuts, mix well.
  8. Garnish with coriander and serve.
Suggestions -
To roast the peanuts in microwave, just spread the peanuts either in a paper plate or a microwave safe plate and microwave hi for 1-2 minutes, depending on your microwave's output. You can safely microwave on hi for a minute and then microwave on hi for 30 secs and increase by 30 secs till the peanuts are roasted.
